Thanks - this is for use in a theme, but I already know if I am in a course or not.
If yes, then the user will be either in course/view.php or in mod/modname/view.php so the URL will give me the extra info I need - many thanks!
Moodle has so much info cached in memory, I assumed there might be a $PAGE->course->currentsection.
